Have you ever purchased a load of fresh produce only to have it spoil a few days later? In most cases, there’s no reason that well-selected fresh food should begin to rot except for improper storage. This is where food storage hacks comes in to save the day, preserve food, and save you money. Here are a few food storage hacks your mom may not even know!

 

1. Honey

You can provide honey with a long shelf- life by storing it in a tightly sealed glass jar in a cool area.  In fact, the sweet nectar is believed to be one of the longest lasting foods in the world.

 

2. Eggs

Eggs can be frozen as other food products, so you should simply crack them into an ice cube container, with a little salt or sugar, in order not to become grainy, and use as needed.


3. Tomato sauce

Put the tomato sauce in a freezer bag and leave it to freeze. After an hour, it should be frozen enough so that you can use the back of a knife and separate the mass into individual portions. As in, push the sauce back and forth.


4. Bananas

You can reduce or slow down the appearance of brown spots by wrapping the stem of the banana in cling wrap.


5. Herbs

Now your herbs can last for ages! When you want to pick your herbs then you just need a little olive oil in which to freeze them.


6. Celery, broccoli, and lettuce

These vegetables last much longer and remain crunchy if stored in the fridge wrapped in aluminium foil.


7. Potatoes, onions, and apples

9. Berries

You should place fresh berries straight into a bowl with water and vinegar (ratio 10:1). Then, drain them in a sieve after 5 minutes and let dry. It will kill off the small micro-organisms (of the biological kind) and extends their shelf- life.

 

10. Vegetables

Vegetables should be frozen after being lightly blanched. This gives them a longer shelf-life.

 

11. Lettuce

Lettuce lasts longer when wrapped in a paper towel because the extra moisture can’t make it go bad – instead it’s soaked up by the paper towel.

 

12. Apples

Apples last for a long time. In the fridge, they can last up to 6 months. You just need to keep an eye our for that famous rotten apple and get rid of it. Otherwise, it’ll spoil the rest.

 

13. Carrots

Carrots will last forever if stored in the dark in sand.

 

14. Mince

With the same method used for the tomato sauce, you can freeze and portion the left over mincemeat. Then just thaw and use as required.

 

15. Cheese in buckets

Cheese in buckets lasts twice as long when it’s stored up-side-down!

 

16. Instead of Tupperware 

Instead of plastic containers, store your food in glass jars. It lasts much longer.

 

17. Cheese

Store your cheese in special, grease-proof paper. It lasts longer, doesn’t sweat, and doesn’t taste like plastic.

 

18. Pineapple

Remove the crown and stand the pineapple on its head. It’ll make the pineapple enjoyable for longer.

 

19. Spring onions

Leave spring onions to grow by placing them in water. When you need them, they’ll be fresh and crisp. From the bulb, you can even grow completely new onions.

 

20. Cake

Cake will last much longer when protected by pieces of white bread. They remove the moisture from the surrounding air and at the same time prevent the cake from drying out, where it’s been cut.
