A lavender sleep sachet might be all you need to help you fall asleep if you've been having trouble falling asleep at night because aromatherapy is such a powerful tool for rest and relaxation. Its calming aroma has been demonstrated to elevate mood in addition to acting as a mild sedative and making you sleepy. Sleepless nights are at least four times more common in people who are depressed and anxious, so mood enhancement is essential if you want to enjoy both being awake and asleep!
You can make these as fancy or simple as you like. If you’re handy with a needle and thread there’s no end to the creative touches you can add to how they look, and they make great gifts, especially for someone you know who is stressed out..
You will need…
- Two 6 inch squares of lightweight breathable fabric-muslin is preferable, but thin cotton or cheesecloth works as well
- Thread, needle, scissors, ribbon
- Dried lavender flowers
- Lavender essential oil
*you can also purchase little bags or sachets premade if you prefer*
Directions
Cut 2 pieces of thin, breathable, fabric such as muslin or cheesecloth, into 6 inch squares. Put the two pieces of fabric together with the colored or patterned sides facing inwards, if there is one-we turn the sachet inside out after we sew it, so this is an important step. Thread your needle, pin the sides if need be, and sew 3 of the four sides together. It doesn’t have to look beautiful (you could even cut up an old cotton tee shirt and recycle it this way) but make sure there are no gaps.
Turn the fabric inside out, so the colored side is now showing. Fill with dried lavender, leaving enough room at the top to tie it off.
Add a drop or 2 or lavender essential oil (or however much you prefer) and then use your ribbon to tie the bag shut tightly. Place under your pillow or in your pillowcase or on a bedside table. This sachet is also good put in clothes drawers, giving them a nice fresh scent.
Customize!
Alter the size of your sachet if you like, and do experiment with different blends of herbs! For example, chamomile is also relaxing. Add it to your lavender and you have an extra-sleepy sachet. Rosemary is invigorating and increases alertness, while jasmine is stimulating. Make a little sachet of those two and set it on your desk so you don’t doze off at work. Essential oils are optional, but they shouldn’t be underestimated (did you know that just a little bit of clove oil can get rid of a toothache?) They give the scent of the sachet that little extra boost and really make the aroma tangible and effective, so use them if possible. There’s no end to the combination of herbs you can put together to create a delightful little sachet that can benefit you (or your friends) in a fabulous number of ways.
