Hangovers are not fun at all. Should I win the prize for the century's best understatement? You have to put up with them because they're more than terrible—they're a guaranteed way to make your day miserable. When you have the flu or a bad cold, you can rationalize missing work, but it's more difficult to do so when you're hungover, no matter how bad you feel. Nonetheless, it is estimated that approximately 148 billion dollars are lost each year as a result of people missing work due to hangovers or not being well enough to perform their jobs.
1. Coconut water
A major factor of hangovers is that your brain especially is dehydrated from the alcohol you drank last night. To relieve this, you can drink coconut water which is full of electrolytes and potassium (569 milligrams), that helps you to hydrate your body again.
You can drink this instead of ordinary water because it has more flavour, minerals and nutrients. Drink coconut water instead of sports drinks which have sugars, that can cause weight gain and increase your chances of developing diabetes.
2. Asparagus
This vegetable can be consumed before and after drinking, as they contain substances that help the body to break down alcoholic compounds, enabling them to leave the body quicker and easier.
A research in Korea discovered that these compounds contained in asparagus increase the body’s production of dehydrogenase and acetaldehyde, enzymes that are responsible for the breakdown of alcohol.
3. Ginger
Ginger has been used for millennia to cure all sorts of nausea, including hangovers. The fresh ginger have special effect when chewed or if your hangover will not permit you to eat any food, add grated ginger root to hot water or fresh juice and drink it.
4. Tomato juice
Heavy drinking rids the body of nutrients and minerals that are necessary for smooth body functions. Without these nutrients, your body reacts to cause hangovers. Tomato juice is full of many of those nutrients and minerals that restock your body to boost function.
The liver is one organ that gets boosted by tomato juice consumption and the liver is the organ that is responsible for the break down of alcohol.
Vitamins and antioxidants are also supplied to the body, reducing inflammations to body organs that many times result from drinking.
5. Lemon water
Lemon water is very similar to tomato juice, it also helps to relieve hangovers. It just like tomato juice boosts the function of the liver by providing vitamin C that reduce inflammations to the organ, enabling it to do its work better and faster for getting rid of alcohol affects. It is prepared by squeezing lemon into water.
